The Biggest Data Science and Analytics Conferences Not To Miss In 2022 - Issue 79
A roundup of the most popular conferences, events, and workshops about data analysis and data science for 2022.
Welcome to a monthly free edition of my Data Analysis Journal, a weekly newsletter and advice column about data analysis, data science, and business intelligence.
If you’re not a paid subscriber, here’s what you missed this month:
As The World Churns - a deep dive into churn: how to calculate it, best practices to report churn, and effective ways to visualize it. You can take a look at some common mistakes with churn reporting and why this can be one of the most complex SaaS metrics to understand.
A Selection Of SQL Tutorials - a round-up of my favorite FREE tutorials, classes, and workshops to get started, progress, or advance in SQL. There’s everything from interview preparation materials to the best ways to learn and practice SQL on your own.
If you are like me, you are obsessed with planning and scheduling. So, to start off January 2022, I’m already busy with not only making a mulled wine but also researching events, booking my calendar, allocating the budget, and planning for the full year ahead.
Today I wanted to share the biggest events scheduled for this year in data analytics and data science. As we are still in a pandemic, many conferences this year will happen virtually. It changes the networking aspect a little, but on the plus side, you have the flexibility to pick and choose the workshops and talks you want to listen to, and maybe skip that important pitch about another THE BEST BI tool on the market (there is none yet. Trust me. I keep my eye out for things like that).
Data Analytics
Enterprise Data World - in-person event in San Diego during March 20-25. This conference is solely focused on data management including data governance, data architecture, blockchain tech, data integration, data modeling, metadata management, BA, and everything for enterprise data management.
Data Connect 2022 this year is scheduled for June 2-3 in Columbus, OH. “DataConnect Conference brings together industry leaders, technical experts, and entrepreneurs to discuss the latest trends, advancements, technologies, and innovations in data, analytics, machine learning, and AI.”
Gartner Data & Analytics Summit will happen on May 9-11 in London, UK, and then on July 25-26 in Sydney, Australia. Pick your place. It will focus on anything analytics-related, from setting a data analytics strategy to data technology and trends to data leadership.
AI & Big Data Expo - Santa Clara, California will host over 5000 attendees this year during May 11-12. With over 250 speakers, this massive event covers a wide range of topics within AI and Big Data - deep learning, chatbots, AI, Big Data Analytics, and of course a lot about BI.
Data Summit 2022 is an annual event running since 2014. Last year it was a virtual conference - Data Summit Connect 2021. This year, it is scheduled to happen in Boston on May 17-18. The summit is focused on data management and also will include special events like AI and ML Learning Summit, DataOps Bootcamp, and Database and DevOps Bootcamp.
Another similar summit is called World Data Summit and will be happening in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on 18-20 May. Most topics will be focused on analytics - market segmentation, digital attribution, user experience journeys, data privacy and ethics, and more.
Of course, I must mention the annual Snowflake Summit happening in Las Vegas on June 13-16. As of now, over 250 sessions are scheduled across data architecture and analytics. You can read last year’s recap here.
Data Science
Data Science Salon: AI and Machine Learning in the Enterprise - the first DSS event at such a scale will happen online + in-person in Miami on February 16th.
Deep Learning Summit this year will happen in San Francisco on February 17-18 and then again in London on September 22-23. If you’re so inclined and enthusiastic, you could visit it twice! The first time enjoying coffee from a paper Starbucks cup, and the second time carrying a tray with a kettle and a porcelain teacup. This conference aims to bridge “the gap between the latest technological research advancements and real-world applications in business and society”. Topics covered: data architecture, data efficiency, deep learning, deep neural networks, and more.
ODSC 2022 will be back in Boston on April 19-21 and then again in San Francisco on November 1-3. Last year my journal was partnering with ODSC, and I did a quick recap here of some of the sessions. Looks like this year the conference will be just as insightful, and there is a strong lineup of amazing speakers. I’ll definitely join.
Women in Data Science Puget Sound Conference will take place in Seattle, WA, on April 26. It will include a “datathon” and some workshops focused on applied ML and analytics. The Women in Data Science (WiDS) community aims to inspire and educate data scientists around the world, regardless of gender. It started as a conference at Stanford in November 2015. Now, WiDS includes a global conference, with approximately 150+ regional events worldwide.
MLDM 2022, International Conference on ML and Data Mining is back this year on July 16-21 in New York. You could say this is an international conference, as people in the US don’t use “data mining” wording anymore. The workshops include data mining in marketing, case-based reasoning, and multimedia forensic data analysis. Sounds exciting.
Real Business Intelligence Conference will happen for real in September, but most likely will be a virtual event. The new speakers' lineup is still not public, but we know that topics will focus on anything BI-related, from the most common tools and practices to challenges and impact.
NLP
You just missed the Global NLP Summit happening this past weekend, but check out the link for some of the recorded sessions and talks.
If you are into NLP, here is a list of all planned International NLP conferences in 2022 and 2023 across the globe. This year in June two big events will happen in the USA:
Semantic Web and Natural Language Processing in New York
Natural Language Processing and Cognitive Computing in San Francisco
Another big Healthcare NLP Summit, an online training, is scheduled for April with many workshops.
A year will be busy. I’ll stop here, but there are also many other events on AI, data engineering, and architecture scheduled and planned for this year. If you think I missed some important summit, please let me know and I’ll add it.
🔥 My favorite articles this month
I am not a big fan of PLG yet, but some materials they have are good. For example, the recent article - How to Achieve Product-Led Growth in 2022 (In Record Time). Product-Led Growth is a “new” go-to-market strategy that is built on top of product offering (free trial) as a way to acquire, convert, and retain customers (unlike sales strategy).
An interesting satirical article about using data science to generate fake resumes, fake headshots, and fake tweets to land a job: “You’re Only Human. Don’t Let That Stop You From Advancing Your Career.” Brilliant.
If you are a SQL nerd and have nothing to do over the weekend, you may enjoy this new piece about how to generate pentagon numbers in PostgreSQL. I don’t know why… This is how SQL becomes an art.
A more practical SQL solution - Finding Customer Names with Interesting Unicode Characters. It contains a SQL query for finding rows containing unusual characters like emojis and symbols.
How To Measure Content Marketing ROI - what metrics to use, how to set up Google Analytics, how to identify, locate, and calculate leads, and more.
Read a thought breakdown of the interview process and requirements in this recent piece - The Adobe Data Analyst Interview.
Another good article from InterviewQuery - Data Visualization Interview Questions that covers expectations and questions for BI and other analytic roles.
A little on benchmarks: I found this interesting read from ChartMogul - What Is a Good Monthly Growth Rate for SaaS Startups? The author defines it against MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue) and goes deep into business metrics and user segments.
📊 Chart Drop
Just one more video.
According to a new report from App Annie, global TikTok users are now spending almost 20 hours a month on the app — more than the average for Instagram and the same as on Facebook.
This is bringing user engagement to another level. I’d love to know their DAU/MAU ratio. I bet it’s over 60%.
🪴Some housekeeping
As my journal is growing, I am looking for a few enthusiastic analysts to join me in writing, coffee drinking, and managing content creation. Please respond to this email if you would like to help me out or share your work!
Thanks for reading, everyone. Until next Wednesday!
